Mac or PC: Which is Right for You?

Mac or PC: Which is Right for You?

The most common debate when deciding on buying a computer is which operating system to go with. The biggest debate is generally between deciding on a Mac or PC, and it seems to extend more than just the cute and humorous commercials seen on t.v. every day. While they are both equally used across the world, they are as individual as different people rather than just machines.

A PC is familiar to most people. We know how to work it, where certain buttons are, and it if anything were to go wrong with it, most people are familiar enough to at least make an attempt to fix it. For those who have always used a Mac, they may have that familiarity as well. However, the biggest challenge is moving from a PC to the Mac, because they are both set up differently and have completely different appearances.

One of the bonuses of a PC is that it supports all programs, primarily because programs are designed for it and not the other way around. It is hard to find the same programs to be supported on a Mac, and if they are they look and are set up differently.

Although people are more familiar with the PC, those who have switched over to the Mac can all agree that once they have figured out how to navigate it, it is actually easier to work with than the Mac. It is safer, faster and more reliable than the PC has ever been.

Online Gaming

There are a lot of uses for computers but the one that seems to be a hit for most of the teenage community is games. Computer games are as simple as the solitaire that comes installed with the computer to the complexity of online play in games like the popular World of Warcraft. Computer games have produced what seems like a new breed of people called “Gamers” and they know everything there is to know about gaming online.

There are websites that provide games to those of us who aren’t quite at the Gamer stage, but are looking for something fun to do online. One website that is often visited in Addicting Games, which is full of plenty of different games from Bejeweled to Simulation games. There are a lot of games that can be bought in stores that are played on the computer.

Oberon media is a company that creates and sells games for the computer. Some popular games that they have come up with include Diner Dash, Wedding Dash, Parking Dash, Cake Mania, Jane’s Hotel and other fun little games. Most of these games are really reasonably priced at around ten dollars per game.

A lot of people play World of Warcraft which is a game played in real time in a not so real world.

Characters quest and battle it out to raise levels and become the best. This game is a game that costs a monthly fee rather than one straight out fee, and people don’t mind paying.

Internet Connection Speeds Issues

One of the things people seem to worry about with the internet most is the speed of the connection, how fast pages load and how fast things get downloaded. Different service providers have different speeds for different prices, but whether the customer chooses dial up, high speed or fibre optics, it is often confused with the computer speeds and tech support gets a lot of pointless calls.

When a customer thinks they are having slow speeds, the first thing one should ask is where they are noticing the slow speeds. Is it browsing from page to page online? Downloading a song on a music downloader? Or opening basic programs on the computer? If it is downloading music, one should know that peer to peer programs have their own set ups for speed and it has nothing to do with internet speeds.

If the customer has trouble opening basic programs, that is a signal that it is the computer that is slow and internet speeds have nothing to do with that either. However, if the problem is browsing from page to page in the browser, then the next step is to run a speed test. The most popular site to do this is at Speedtest.net, as it gives the most accurate readings.

If the speeds aren’t what they should be, give the internet provider’s technical support department a call and they can generally give a great walk through on how to fix the problem. Sometimes it is as simple as a click.

Reformatting Can Equal Disaster

After a computer is used for a length of time, it becomes full and can be really slow when loading or opening programs. There are a few different options for fixing this, and they include: System Restore (which will set the computer back to a specific time and date, removing any large programs that may have been responsible for slowness), Disc Defragment (which is really useless unless one has anything older than Windows XP, but can sometimes help avert problems) and a Reformatting, an effective way to clean the computer.

A Reformat will wipe one’s hard drive completely clean. It will delete all files (good or bad, wanted or unwanted) from the computer’s system leaving nothing but basically a blank sheet. The best recommendation one can be given is to avoid doing this without the help of a professional computer technician. Doing it yourself or having a friend do it will most likely always lead to trouble.

One of the largest problems seen when this isn’t done by a professional is that once the reformat is complete (if it actually completes) there are many different parts of it that may be left out. An important part is everything located in the Network Connections folder. Adapters that make the internet connection work get left out and a lot of people do not have the proper disks to install them back again.

Reformatting can easily become a disaster if not done properly, and one will lose any important files they may have saved on that computer unless they have backed it up. Backing up the data can occur through the use of discs, or even through the many internet programs that allow users to back up their data in as little as five minutes, with the touch of a button. You can easily back up the data to ensure that you don’t lose valuable information from your personal computer.

Quick Guide To UTorrent Downloading

Although piracy is considered illegal, downloading movies and music off the internet is one of the most common purposes for internet usage today. There are a lot of different programs that can be used: Limewire, Frostwire, Ares and Kazaa are a few examples of free programs that a lot of people use. There are also programs like Napster that require payment for each item downloaded – these types of programs are often easier to use, as the programs can be easily downloaded once payment has been made for the item. These types of programs take the guess work out of knowing if you are getting a harmful virus along with the media or program that I being downloaded.

These programs are great but have a lot of different problems that go along with them (such as viruses). Utorrent is a downloading client that is great for movies and music, as well as bigger things like software, games and other programs. It is rather complicated to figure out, so this is a quick guide to Utorrent downloading.

Step one is to actually download the Utorrent program and the best place to do this is on the Cnet download site. Once that has been done, (and set up is pretty easy to follow) go to google and search for websites that carry torrents. A few that come highly recommended are Torrent Root, Torrent Reactor, UTorrent and The Pirate Bay.

On these sites, one can search for movie titles or whatever else they wanted to find, and choose the one that has the best rating and the highest seed count. Click on the torrent to download. One will then have a box pop up asking if one wants to download in Utorrent. Click ok and the file will begin to download as fast as the connection allows.

Choosing the Right Antivirus Program

One of the biggest problems that occur with computers is viruses. The secondary issues are things like spyware, malware, pop ups and other things that are relatively annoying and can prove to be very harmful the one’s hard drive. Because certain people decided to sit around to come up with these annoyances, companies have sat around and come up with remedies for them.

Antivirus programs seem to come a dime a dozen, but which ones actually work and which ones are affordable? Norton and McAfee are two well known and very expensive anti-viruses, and while most people know about them, very few people use them anymore. One of reasons is because they are so costly; another reason is because they tend to slow down internet and email speeds.

There are also free anti-virus programs that can be found online, and they don’t slow speeds at all. A few really good ones to use are AVG and Avira, two of which are free to use, and are proven to actually work. AVG does tend to scan all incoming emails, which causes it to be slow. This is an option that can be disabled leaving an otherwise decent anti-virus. A lot of internet service providers have their own programs that they provide with the service.

Although these options through the providers most often require monthly fees, they are well worth the money spent. For example, most internet providers provide free 24 hour technical support on their software, whereas programs like Norton charge a fee for the program to be installed into the computer, as well as fees for the updates of the certain programs each year.

In the case that you choose to buy the program through the internet, this also comes with a fee as well as a timed subscription, at which point, coverage will stop once the term has been completed.
